Though the market for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving systems (ADS) for commercial vehicles has become increasingly advanced, many barriers still prevent full adoption, finds a new report from Navigant Research. The study segments vehicles by class and region, finding that sales of highly automated commercial vehicles are not expected to exceed 1 percent until 2028.
The most important benefit of ADAS is its potential to greatly increase the safety of the vehicle through features such as automatic emergency breaking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The technology also has the potential to improve fuel efficiency through platooning in heavy duty vehicles, such as trucks.
Due to the expected improvement to vehicle safety, sales of cars with ADS technology expected to grow immensely once the technology is fully developed and affordable. Overall, higher levels of automation could eventually reduce labor costs by replacing some of the labor, while forcing price pressure down on the demand for labor in the rest of the market.
“Automated technologies can provide many benefits for the commercial vehicle sector, but challenges such as advancing technological abilities, overreliance on partially automated systems, regulatory environments, and public perception will all need to be managed moving forward,” says William Drier, research analyst at Navigant Research in a press statement.
